Every new member goes through a beginner series before starting group classes.   Whether you've been working out regularly or its been a little while, this series will prepare your body and your mind for CrossFit training. But is it really worth it? This is likely the most common question we are asked when new people are seeking to join. Christine Tavener has been a member since 2010. She shares her journey below, in her own words and how it helped her kickstart and commit to a 15 year journey into loving fitness, CrossFit and the community. Have a read:

"Often newcomers to CrossFit will ask if Foundations is “really necessary”. After all it’s an added expense and if you’ve already been working out regularly or weightlifting for a while, do you need to learn what you feel you already know? As someone who’s been a member of FirePower for 15+ years, the concise answer is ABSOLUTELY.

My journey at FirePower started 15 years ago, before Foundations existed. I joined classes but after about 3 months I called Andrea to tell her that I felt in over my head and wanted to drop my membership. She was super excited, not the expected response, because she said that a new program had been developed that was exactly for people like me. That is, people that had some familiarity with the lifts but were having trouble incorporating them into a workout, and how to adapt lifts and/or movements to increase momentum during a workout.

I was skeptical, I just didn’t think I was up to CrossFitting, but I paid the extra cost and did the course.

In classes, I find it hard to be coached HOW to do a movement when I’m in the middle of a workout. It’s hard enough for me to keep count of reps or to remember what movements I need to do or in what order.  Enter the Foundations course.

I got specific coaching based on the way I did movements that helped me a) not hurt myself, b) be more efficient, and c) get stronger because I was able to handle more weight when I knew how to lift properly.

I went from wanting to quit CrossFit to loving it.

Trainers offer knowledgeable and experienced coaching at every opportunity, but it’s because of the Foundations program that we can even understand what they’re talking about.

For those who begrudge the cost, like I did, here are a few comparison facts:

Most gyms charge an upstart fee or admin fee when you join.A quick online search shows that can be between $50 and as high as several hundred or more if you’re looking at a private club. What you get for that fee is membership, the same membership that you’ll be paying for monthly. As well, many gyms recharge that fee on your yearly anniversary, so it’s not even a one-time thing. I found a gym that charged a $30 facility fee on top of the startup fee. Where did they think you were going to work out?  The point is you don’t GET anything for these admin charges.

The 3 Foundations sessions give you everything you need to feel comfortable, or at least not terrified, to walk into a CrossFit class and do a WOD, not to mention you’ll understand what a WOD even is. You’ll learn how to lift, have better, safer form, where your weaknesses are, the format of aWOD, and how to understand what’s on the whiteboard. And you’ll have learned all of this with a ratio of one certified trainer to one or two participants. Practically personal training, for a fraction of the cost!

Pay the money and get the rewards. Foundations is an awesome deal. "
